Helpful Empathy Circle Info by Edwin Rutsch :
Time Zones
Shared by Sally Rodeman...Some things that I find are helpful:
The active listener - no judgment; listen deeply with full attention, you might take notes; no conversation with the speaker, save that for your turn as speaker. Remind the speaker to pause if you lose track, or clarify; no evaluation, no praise or discouragement, or advice. No counseling or being sympathetic. Just a reflection so the speaker can hear what they are saying out loud.
The Silent listeners should not create distracting side conversations. The Silent listeners simply listen and honor the speaker with quiet, full attention.
The speaker doesn't talk to judge, criticize, influence, embarrass, or make assumptions about another person in the circle. The speaker treats everyone with equal respect. The speaker does not create a fight in the group, nor dominate nor bully others. The goal is for the speaker to hear what they are saying summarized by the active listener, and learn more about themself.

Marshall Rosenberg said the main criteria of empathy are:
1. Are you speaking and acting from your own experience?
aka, Teacher, heal thy self... Empathy is not about "fixing" other people.
2. Is your practice of empathy contributing to well-being?
aka: Do No Harm. "Ahimsa".
Q: When should empathy not be applied for one reason or another (eg. poor physical or mental health situation)?
A: I cannot think of a situation in which self-compassion, self-empathy, and self-connection is not "appropriate".

MRI scans show that after an eight-week course of mindfulness practice, the brain's “fight or flight” center, the amygdala, appears to shrink. ... As the amygdala shrinks, the pre-frontal cortex – associated with higher order brain functions such as awareness, concentration and decision-making – becomes thicker (expands).
